Good-Bye, Fish (The Animal Square)
by Judith Koppens, illustrated by Eline Van Lindenhuizen
Ages 3-5 32 pages Clavis July 2013 Hardcover

Kitty is sad because her fish won’t play anymore. “Fish will only lie on his back,” she says. Dog suggests swishing the bowl and giving the fish a tickle, but neither makes the fish swim.

When Giraffe realizes what’s wrong, he explains, “Fish has died.” The news makes Kitty cry, and Giraffe says, “I’m so sorry, Kitty. It’s hard to lose someone you love.”

After her friends help her bury the fish, they return often to the burial site with water (Fish’s favorite). Days later, a flower sprouts from the ground, and it’s the same color as the fish.

Glossy, thick double-page spreads feature three animals that live in Animal Square. The blue and white background reflect the somber mood of the characters. The “see you again soon!” message that appears on the end pages of the book is a little jarring to read after a story about a death, but the book may help children say goodbye to their own pet.
