Beginning readers who have mastered the simplest two or three-word sentences composed of mostly rhyming three or four-letter words will discover just the right amount of challenge in Candlewick's Brand New Readers books.
Hey, Tabby Cat! follows the orange-striped feline through four short tales of mischief, told with slightly more sophisticated sentences that will have kindergarten and first-grade children inordinately proud of themselves for reading.
Tabby Cat chases after a mouse, a butterfly, and a frog, but they all run away before she can catch them - so she goes after less likely but less mobile prey. When she is still hungry after eating her bowl full of food, she hunts near a tree, a plant, and a fence to no avail. Then she hunts near Sammy, her boy, and finds a tasty treat.
Tabby Cat first makes a big mess swatting fresh vegetables from a basket, until she swats a tomato - SPLAT! - and finds herself chased out of the kitchen. She makes up for her naughtiness by washing herself from ear to tail; then she moves on to Sammy.
Katharine McEwen's bright, simple cartoon illustrations provide great hints for early readers coming across occasional unfamiliar words, as do the text introductions (for parents or teachers to read). The single sentence per page format is perfect for new-to-school aged children to limit distractions from new words. And Tabby Cat's antics are cute, to boot.
