This World of Reading Level 2 paperback unfolds at Donald Duck’s house when his three nephews come over to play. Just after Huey, Dewey and Louie arrive, it begins to rain; any outdoor activities are not possible.
The boys try board games and painting, but these activities don’t really hold their interest. When their uncle falls asleep, though, they come up with something a lot more enjoyable. After Uncle Donald falls asleep in his chair, Huey, Dewey and Louie decide to build a fort around him.
Rearranging the furniture and using other items from inside the house, the boys create Fort McDuck. Needless to say, Donald is more than surprised when he awakens and sees how his living room has been transformed. Fortunately, the rain then stops, and he can send his nephews outside to play in the yard.
With a more detailed narrative than you often find with readers like this, this little book will not only hold the child’s interest but also provide the opportunity to actually do a little reading! I also like that fact that there wasn’t the offensive chemical odor that you often find in inexpensive books of this nature.
As a Level 2 book, the story offers a nice but manageable challenge for a child in kindergarten or first grade.
