I'm Grumpy (My First Comics)
by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm
Ages 2-5 22 pages Random House January 2016 Board book

What rains on cute bunnies and frowns at the sunshine? Grumpy Cloud! He makes his debut appearance in I’m Grumpy, a board book in the My First Comics series.

His mood is understandable, though, even by the youngest of readers. Does anyone like it when their ice cream drops or they get woken up early? When Sunny the sun tries to cheer him up with a big smile and a hug, he just gets grumpier and does something really bad. He loses his temper and KABOOM, a thunderstorm begins.

When he realizes this only makes him feel worse, he apologizes to the sun with a flower that he grows himself. The last double-page spread shows how two opposites can share the same space in the sky peacefully.

I love this story. I like how it’s told in comic book-style panels with bright colors and few words. The characters are memorable for all the right reasons, and the sun appears again in another My First Comics, I’m Sunny!

The book is small in size, but not too small for an audience at preschool storytime.
