Jack Frost (The Guardians of Childhood)
by William Joyce
Ages 3-8 48 pages Atheneum Books October 2015 Hardcover

The Guardians of Childhood are people like Santa Claus and Mother Goose who keep children safe. In Jack Frost (The Guardians of Childhood), Joyce tells how a boy once named Nightlight (best friend of the Man in the Moon) fell to earth and become Jackson Overland Frost.

While battling Pitch (the Nightmare King), he managed to keep his best friend safe, but once on earth, Nightlight “became lost”. His golden uniform fell away, and everything he touched turned cold.

The fantastical multimedia illustrations show how Jack Frost’s moods (and oath) tie into the seasons. Although the author talks about Jack protecting the children of Earth, the illustrations do not reflect this. The children in the story are of different ages, but they all look Caucasian.

Children who enjoyed the Rise of the Guardians movie may find this book entertaining.
