Translated from the French book by Claudia Bedrick, Pomelo Begins to Grow is about a tiny pink elephant who discovers, one morning, that his favorite dandelion is “surprisingly small.”
This leads to Pomelo measuring the dandelion, strawberries, ants and himself, further sparking a stream of consciousness which has Pomelo asking himself questions such as “What has to happen on the inside for him to grow on the outside?” And “there’s the question if growing up means growing old?” After much serious and humorous consideration, Pomelo discovers that growing up is not a bad thing, after all.
The colorful illustrations capture Pomelo’s range of emotions from curiosity to concern and worry to wonderment on the quest to find out about changes and life.
Pomelo’s wonderings about growing big, growing up, growing old and what each of these stages will mean for him not only on a physical but also an emotional and social level sweetly and effectively reflect the concerns and questions that children have as they try to understand the tangible and intangible aspects of change and life. Thought-provoking and entertaining, this story leaves children with a positive message about change and growth.
Highly recommended.
