Baby-preschool 24 pages Golden Books April 2006 Board book

If you are looking for an entertaining way to teach your children about basic modes of transportation, then you will be thrilled to discover Richard Scarry’s Books on the Go!. The publishers have put together an appealing presentation, offering a hollow hardcover book (smothered with the same inviting illustrations as the other Richard Scarry classics) which opens up to reveal four perfectly housed board books - each of which covers a different category of vehicles including boats, cars, trucks, and planes and other flying things.

Each page of the four board books has a vibrant illustration of familiar Scarry characters on a particular vehicle, the name of which is printed in large, bold letters. The book on boats covers motorboats, sailboats, rowboats, even a dinghy. The book on cars has everything from a police car and ambulance, to a big and small convertible, to a “cheese convertible” and a “hammer car.” Many of the drawings will likely elicit laughter from children old enough to recognize the humor behind a slab of Swiss cheese with wheels labeled a “cheese car.”

The book on trucks includes a fire truck and dump truck, along with a fruit truck losing its produce and a “pickle tanker truck” that meets its demise later in the book on the page that depicts a steamroller. The final book on planes and other flying things includes such basics as a helicopter, jet plane, kite and hot air balloon, along with a “shark mouth plane” and the “apple copter” driven by the worm (Lowly) who makes regular appearances in Richard Scarry’s stories.

These four books presented in a carrying case the size and shape of a standard hardcover book will delight children of all ages as they receive what might be their initial exposure to Richard Scarry’s characters and learn about real and imaginary modes of transportation. If you travel anywhere, it should be to the nearest bookstore or library to get your hands on a copy of Richard Scarry’s Books on the Go!.
