Although rats don’t appear on most people’s “favorite critter” list (or at least not up towards the top!), this picture book may slightly alter the image of these unpopular little rodents.
If you are a rat, you certainly know that Rat Law states that cheese—any type of cheese—belongs to you. If you see a nice piece of cheese, seize the moment and either grab it and run for home or eat it on the spot.
Of course, as you’ll see when you read this book, Rat Law does include some interesting exceptions to the Cheese Rule. For example, if a bigger, stronger, faster or scarier rat wants the cheese, you pretty much have to step aside and let him have your cheese!
A tumble of cumulative adjectives (quickest, strongest, scariest, dirtiest) and a frenzy of hungry rodents build up to this picture book’s final note of politeness and will satisfy any child’s appetite for silliness.
Usually rats are only attractive to other rats, but illustrator Viviane Schwarz manages to capture the humor in this situation and make the cast of hairy cartoon characters almost adorable. (Note: I said “almost”.)
