The Flying Beaver Brothers and the Crazy Critter Race

Ages 6-10 96 pages Knopf March 2015 Hardcover

I was hooked when the Roping Raccoon Sisters called the Flying Beaver Brothers “baldy tails.”

These two skilled sisters both impress and annoy the brothers. They are all competing in the Crazy Critter Race. “YEEHAW!” The penguins are sad that the prize for replanting the most trees is not pancakes, but the others are ecstatic at the thought of winning and owning a new houseboat.

There are so many memorable animal characters in this sixth book in the series because they are so funny! They either say something funny (“You! Give it a crazy ring”) or do something that makes you laugh (the bird holding up a wall of the brothers’ house).

Fans who are familiar with the series will be interested to know the color theme in this book is yellow (like in the Lunch Lady series by Jarrett J. Krosoczka). It’s available in hardcover, so it will last longer than a paperback graphic novel.

This book can be read as a stand-alone. It’s been a few years since I read number one and two and I was able to follow along and enjoy this new book. I like that the author incorporates facts into the dialogue (after one beaver is teased about his tail, he holds it in his paws and says, ‘They’re like this for swimming’).

In their little yellow swimming trunks, the brothers look irresistibly cute! But there is a lot of adventure and action in the books for boys. The trees turn out to be magical vines that grow out of control and cover everything. The villain is funny because his reason for being evil has to do with his fear of spiders and his seedy business practices. He is a greedy, crazy critter!

Eaton continued to impress me right to the end of the story because the competitors become friends, the brothers use their own natural talents and abilities to solve the problems (the cutting power of their teeth), and the unique sound effects feature sounds such as shoof, blooboo, and yut.
