Ages 7-10 96 pages Knopf January 2012 Paperback

Ace and Bub are the Flying Beaver Brothers. (To tell them apart, look at their shorts. Ace wears solid colors, Bub wears stripes.)

Their new penguin roommates like to make pancakes, and later on in this graphic novel, the pancakes are used in an attempt to plug up a fake volcano. The layout of the panels and the coloring of the illustrations in this story will remind readers of the Lunch Lady series (Jarrett J. Krosoczka) and the Babymouse series (Jennifer and Matt Holm).

The villains in this second Flying Beaver Brothers story are two greedy fish who run a company that turns trees into wooden toys called Fish Stix. Bruce, the beaver they hire to promote their “environmentally friendly” product, shifts alliances when he feels he’s about to lose the perks that come with his job. This makes it easier for the brothers to save the forest on their island home.

There are a few funny moments in this story, but the ones involving Cynthia the Spatula will likely get the biggest laughs. Look for appearances of the penguins and Bruce the beaver in Eaton’s first story in the Flying Beaver Brother series, The Flying Beaver Brothers and the Evil Penguin Plan.
