Even the youngest children love to look up at the evening sky to see the moon and the stars. Jill Macdonald’s new board book, Hello, World! Solar System, teaches young children about the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets. It uses colorful illustrations with very simple text to introduce the solar system.

On the very first page, readers are urged to look up at the sky and are asked, “What do you see?” It is evening, and the moon is in the sky. In the accompanying text, they learn that, “Astronauts have left their footprints on the moon!” In the daytime, the sun is at the center of the solar system, which is made up of planets. Each planet is presented in a one-page spread with a description and a fun fact. Earth, Saturn, and Pluto get two-page spreads because of their unique qualities. Finally, readers are introduced to stars as well as comets. They discover that, “The solar system is an exciting place!”

Jill McDonald’s vibrant illustrations are full of lively action. Comets fly across the sky, spaceships circle the Earth, and planets revolve around the sun. Readers discover the names of the planets through the colorful illustrations and simple text which describe their unique characteristics. They will also learn that they have their own place in the universe on planet Earth!

Jill McDonald is a Missouri-based writer, illustrator and designer. Hello, World! Solar System is part of the Doubleday Books for Young Readers Hello World! series, an introductory series for young children about the world around them.

Hello, World! Solar System allows teachers and caregivers to introduce simple nonfiction concepts to babies and toddlers. The lack of intricate text will engage young readers in the vastness of the universe. The text of the board book will encourage discussion about important topics such as the sun, the moon, stars, and space travel.
