Secrets of Dripping Fang, Book 4: Fall of the House of Mandible
by Dan Greenburg, illustrated by Scott M. Fischer
Ages 8-12 160 pages Harcourt March 2006 Hardcover

Get ready for another zany adventure with the Shluffmuffin twins! This book begins exactly where the third book of the series ended: in a cornfield with the Mandible sisters in hot pursuit of Cheyenne and Wally. However, it’s hard to hide from giant ants (they have those really big eyes!) and before long the children are captured. Wally manages to escape, but his sister remained in terrible danger. When he partners up with a parade of misfits, they devise a rescue operation that puts the weird in warfare. Can their odd plan finally defeat the Onts?

Packed with humor, and an occasional reference to snot or foot odor, these pages will keep readers laughing. The author writes directly to this age group, using a creative mix of characters, dialogue and hilarious situations. Short chapters, with intriguing titles like “The No Child Left Alive Program” and “Get Your Free Bird Flu Virus” makes turning each page an adventure in itself. This book is totally unpredictable which makes it a complete delight.

There is just the right amount of reality in the story to steer the characters in a type of normalcy. Although most of the situations are beyond extraordinary, Wally’s genuine desire to save his sister anchors the tale to readers’ hearts. And that’s where this author is highly successful. He writes about the realistic emotions this age group faces, but places them in offbeat settings. This is a wonderful opportunity for young children to explore some legitimate feelings in a non-threatening way.

But casting aside any literary analysis, this book is just plain fun to read! I can’t wait for the next installment in the “Secrets of the Dripping Fang” series. Those giant ants have me worried…
