by Hadley Higgenson, illustrated by Maja Andersen
Ages 5-8 58 pages Chronicle Books May 2007 Paperback

Keeker’s adventures are the perfect foil for boredom, the ten-year-old girl and her sneaky pony, Plum, ready to face any new challenge and stir up a little mischief along the way.

Catherine Corey Keegan Dana is delighted when spring arrives on her Vermont farm. First she discovers a baby bird, then a whole family of new-born groundhogs, the farm teeming with new beginnings.

The baby groundhogs are a bit of a problem, however, as Keeker’s father worries that the horses could trip in the holes they make when they burrow into the earth. In order to “Save the Groundhogs,” Keeker creates a play around the legend of Don Quixote, complete with costumes, after which she will plead for the safety of the groundhog babies.

Keeker’s parents fail to come to the play, busy in the barn with Pansy, who is about to deliver a new foal. Caught up in her play and her plans, Keeker stomps into the barn only to find a brand new pony. All gather around to celebrate the birth, even the groundhog family, everyone camping out in the barn overnight. Inspired, Keeker has a brilliant idea: she moves Mrs. Groundhog and her babies to a field no longer used for horses.

Although Keeker’s random adventures are always filled with surprises, this chapter book is not as tightly plotted as the others, Keeker acting much more immature and not nearly as clever as usual. Still, her spirit of adventure remains unchanged, if better directed in other books.
