Keeker (Catherine Corey Keegan Dana) is a “tweener” - nine and a half to be exact, a bit too old for little-girl games but not quite old enough to have outgrown her enthusiasm for adventure and her love for her pony, Plum.
In this chapter book from the Sneaky Pony Series, Keeker spends the summer taking riding lessons, learning how to jump her pony. In Vermont, where she lives, summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, and Keeker and Plum practice their exercises willingly, enrolled in a competition at the end of the summer.
When they arrive at the fairgrounds, Plum is placed next to Tifni’s horse, a pony dressed in the finest tack. Certainly Tifni has the most beautiful and expensive riding habit, not to mention a very confident attitude. Keeker is a bit discouraged, wondering if this competition was a bad idea in the first place.
As an only child, Keeker’s life lessons come to her in unexpected ways, and this situation is no exception. Thanks to the spirited Plum, Keeker learns never to underestimate herself or her pony, taking home the winner’s ribbon after Tifni’s overconfidence proves her undoing.
Written for little girls who love horses and the magic of unicorns, Higginson taps into the special energy of girls of this age group, their growing awareness of the world around them and the joy of accomplishment.
