by Jennifer L. Holm, illustrated by Matt Holm
Ages 7-10 96 pages Random House May 2011 Paperback

The author and illustrator of Babymouse have created a new comic book series that mixes childhood realities with life in the microscopic world.

Squish is an amoeba who wants to have the courage to do what’s right, but when he acts like his comic book hero, Super Amoeba, he finds himself in the cafeteria eating a lunch of tuna instead of tacos, spending time in detention with E.Coli and Bacteria, and being blackmailed by an evil amoeba named Lynwood. If Squish doesn’t help Lynwood cheat on the next test, Lynwood will eat his best friend (a paramecium).

A humorous secondary plot involves an environmentally conscious amoeba who is constantly washing his pseudopods (his hands). Readers will giggle when they see Principal Planaria (he’s a cross-eyed flatworm) and Squish’s upbeat friend Peggy. Squish’s dad makes a brief appearance when Squish turns to him for advice, but the help Squish receives comes not from a parent or a friend, but from a gigantic slime mold named Fluffy.

Monochromatic illustrations (lime green) are drawn in panels of varying size. Commentary and scientific facts appear in arrows alongside the speech bubbles. The characters appear at the end of the book to demonstrate how to grow mold and how to draw Squish. This comic will appeal to boys and girls; especially to the many who enjoy the humor in the Lunch Lady series by Jarrett J. Krosocza.
