I love Haiku, and kids can learn to love writing and reading Haiku, thanks to a book that adds hilarity and laughter to the art of poetry writing. This book focuses on Senryu – a type of Haiku that is shorter, punchier, and filled with humor and puns.
Authors Paul B. Janeczko and J. Patrick Lewis have written between them over 25 children’s books, but this time they team up to present some really silly poetry that will have kid’s tongues twisting and turning. One of my faves is:
My older sister
Gets a complete makeover –
Very mascary!
These Senryu play with words, tossing and turning phrases into juicy jumbles and riddles, all accompanied by the delightfully fun watercolor illustrations of Tricia Tusa. Between the crazy poems and the equally crazy illustrations, kids will be inspired to try to create their own Senryu. But will they be able to compete with this one?
Grandpa’s underwear
Pulled up so high –
A chest of drawers.
Too, too clever!
