Author Stella Blackstone and illustrator Debbie Harter follow their big ol' friendly Bear on a week's worth of strolls around his ursine village in Bear about Town. He walks to a different (but familiar to even small children) location each day of the week - the bakery on Monday, the pool on Tuesday (wearing a old-fashioned men's bathing suit), the movie theater on Wednesday, the gym on Thursday, the toystore on Friday, the park on Saturday and playground on Sunday.
After passing, greeting, and playing with his friends, Bear waves to readers from his house on Bee Lane on a two-page map of the town at story's end. And, as an extra little treat on the inside back cover, we see a tired but happy Bear in his nightcap, cuddling his very own teddy bear and gazing up at a yellow crescent moon.
The delightful busy-but-bold illustrations prepared on thick watercolor paper reveal bears at work and play in all sorts of human situations. Bear about Town makes a good diversion for wee ones themselves on the town with a parent running errands; the exposure to the ordered days of the week and to the
concept of maps make wandering through this book an educational good time.
