A man drives a big, red truck to the edge of a cliff. He stops there and opens the back doors of the truck, allowing birds of all sizes, shapes and colors to fly out and up into the sky. The truck driver watches in amazement as they fly away: “One could almost believe that one day is just like another.”
He starts closing the door of the truck and sees something. It is a little bird: “But somehow something a little more.” The truck driver sits with the little bird then flaps his arms, showing the bird how to fly. Finally, the bird tries and flies away, catching up with the rest of the birds.
The truck driver drives back over the hills and into the distance. It sounds like the end of a sweet little story, but the story gets even sweeter. The birds fly back to the driver and reward his good deed in an imaginative and touching ending.
Little Bird contains simple illustrations in rich, deep, primary colors, capturing the movement of the truck and birds through changing perspective and the bird flight pattern. The sentences are short and infrequent, but poignant and words well chosen: “Most of the times we don’t notice these things…When we take the time to look for them…the small things appear.”
A touching story that tickles the imagination but also conveys a touching and meaningful message about contributing to changes and how one good turn deserves another. Inspiring and uplifting. Highly recommended. Five stars.
