The Adventures of Old Bo Bear tells the story of a young boy and his teddy bear. When Mama determines that Old Bo Bear is filthy and needs to cleaned, she drops him into the washing machine to get the job done. Old Bo Bear comes through the cycle with a fluffy and clean appearance, but without one of his ears.
Despite this unfortunate accident, the young boy and Old Bo Bear continue on with their lives, as they prepare to let their imaginations guide them a string of adventures. They dress for their journey, gather the necessary provisions (such as a some chocolate syrup and a spoon), and prepare themselves for a wild ride. They meet up with pirates on a large ship, saddle a pony and ride out west, and capture criminals while assuming the role of the sheriffs in a small town. They even travel to vacant lots and constructions sites, exposing themselves to the dirt and the sand.
After a full day of exploration, they return back home side-by-side, pleased their day was packed with such a wide range of events. They feel confident that they will return for more experiences but, as the young boy tucks Old Bo Bear in his knapsack before entering his home, they both agree one place Old Bo Bear will never return is into the washing machine to be cleaned.
The bond between the young boy and the Old Bo Bear is a sweet one, and their adventures lend themselves to some wonderful illustrations. Unfortunately, the loss of an ear and the concern over a repeat incident prevent the story from being one that I can recommend.
