Rosenthal (Exclamation Mark, Spoon) tells a story about believing from a unicorn’s perspective. Uni has grown up slightly differently from other unicorns because she (or he; the gender is never stated) is more sparkly and magnificent than other unicorns, and she/he believes in little girls.
Uni has only seen girls in books, but she/he has hopes to meet a real girl soon. Uni doesn’t let teasing or indifference interfere with her/his hobbies (drawing girls) or dreams (sliding down rainbows with a girl).
Uni continues to believe she/he will become friends with a kind, fun-loving girl. The story ends with nighttime scenes of the two future friends waiting patiently for one another. They meet in their dreams, but never in person.
This picture book has 48 pages, but there are not a lot of words on each page. Beautiful illustrations (lots of pinks and purples and stars and nature scenery) and a flowing narrative add a magical feeling to the page.
This would make a delightful story to share with girls who loves My Little Pony or Fairy Tales. To extend this story, ask questions at the end of the book such as, “Where and when will Uni and the girl meet?” and “Will Uni become friends with a boy, too”?
