Lunch Lady and the Video Game Villain: Lunch Lady #9
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Ages 7-10 96 pages Knopf April 2013 Paperback

In their ninth graphic novel, the Lunch Lady and her sidekick, Betty, nab the school’s techno-thief with their modified kitchen gadgets (lunch tray laptop; crazy-straw earpiece).

Hector, one of the Breakfast Bunch students, is busy running for school president against his enemy, Milmoe. He's still able to assist the Lunch Lady when she becomes part of the villain’s new ‘interactive’ video game.

Krosoczka’s latest story sees the return of Mr. Edison’s cyborgs from Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute (Lunch Lady #1) and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves the lunch ladies questioning their future with the school.

The occasional splash of yellow seen in the black-and-white illustrations resembles the coloring technique used in older comic books. As always, there is humor in the Lunch Lady’s expressions (Flying Flapjacks! Sugar Cookies!) and a feeling of vindication when “justice has been served.”

Boys and girls can both enjoy this series.
