Children can learn the numbers one to ten by reciting the classic nursery rhyme One, Two, Buckle My Shoe .
In Yoon’s (Five Rubber Duckies; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star) newest board book, square-shaped die cuts partially cover circus animals. Two mice have developed an entertaining show that includes an elephant that picks up sticks, a lion that lays sticks straight, and a good fat hen that ice skates.
Children can interact with this story in several ways. There are a number of shapes and objects to count (stars, diamonds, feathers, hoops) and two examples of how they can write the numbers one through ten (1 or one, 2 or two). Readers can also ask the children to try and guess what each die cut is covering before they turn the page.
Yoon uses a variety of bright, solid colors in her illustrations and text. The one instance of dialogue in the book is used effectively as a prompt to open the two flaps that appear at the end of the rhyme. This would be a fun book to use when teaching children about numbers, shapes, or rhymes.
