I Haiku You
by Betsy E. Snyder
Grades K-3 32 pages Random House December 2012 Hardcover

I have loved everything else that Betsy Snyder has written, so I must admit that I began reading this little book of haiku for children with eager anticipation. It turned out to be a charmingly simple and heartwarming book that lives up to the standards set by the author/illustrator's other books.

Each double-page spread is illustrated with cheerful watercolor and ink drawings and features a haiku to one of childhood's simple joys: hearing a cardinal sing, coloring with a friend, making snow angels, hugging a beloved teddy bear.

The haiku, in 5-7-5 syllablic format, is both elegant and accessible to young children. In one, a little girl in pajamas clutches a teddy bear and looks at the gigantic smiling moon outside her window. The haiku reads
shiny mister moon --
your smile keeps me company
when the lights go out.
I Haiku You will make a wonderful gift for a young child, perhaps as a Valentine's Day present!
