In Guido van Genechten’s Happy Angry Sad , an oversized board book from the Odd One Out series, children are asked to look at the groups of animals on each double-page spread and to identify the ones who are feeling certain emotions (Who is shy? Who is very shy? Who is angry? Who is very angry?), the ones who look different from the others (Who has a little snowflake on his nose? Who lost a piece of his horn?), and the ones going on a winter holiday (Who is going on a winter vacation?).
Children may need direction when it comes to finding the animals who are the most emotional in the group. For example, the angry rhinos have their mouths open, but the angrier rhinos have their mouths open just a little wider, and the only clue that one polar bear is shier than the next is their cheeks are a little pinker. And children might not know what it means to be proud, or equate the idea that being very proud means holding your hands high in the air. (The merely proud monkeys have their hands on their hips).
The last two pages show all eight vacationing animals at their destination. On every page, the illustrations are a mix of color and black-and-white. On the frog page, the frogs are colored, but the lily pads are just sketched on the page in black. On the turtle page, everything is in color except the sled. This board book doesn’t have much text, but it does allow for lots of interaction and communication.
