Take a Look, Vroom (Slide Book)

These two board books have pages which slide open to reveal toddlers playing in a variety of outdoor situations.

Take a Look, Bunny features a blonde, pig-tailed girl and her stuffed bunny. They play outdoors in the sandbox, on the trampoline, and on the swings and slide in the park.

The text is repetitive. After the girl says hi (or hello) to the bunny and describes what he’s doing, she says "Take a Look." This cues the reader to pull the page apart until the hidden (wordless) picture is revealed. The girl is incorporated into every full page illustration to show the bunny that he is not alone; his best friend is always nearby.

Take a Look, Vroom has more characters (both boys and girls), and the focus is on transportation. The story has an airplane, a two-wheeled bicycle, a hot air balloon, a race car, a boat, and a truck.

When the hidden pages are open, the toddlers are all different. There is no continuity with characters like in Take a Look, Bunny. The blonde girl wears the same red dress throughout her story, but in this book, the characters wear clothes that suit the activity (i.e. the pilot wears goggles and a scarf, the race car drivers wear helmets).

The format of the text is the same. A description follows the greeting and, “Take a Look” prompts the reader to open the page. The same style of solid, bright colors and uncluttered illustrations appear in both stories. The illustrations are outlined with thick black lines and few details.

Grasping the pages and pulling them apart will help children with their fine motors skills. The slide feature also allows the child to participate in the read-aloud by controlling the pacing of the surprises.
