Mr. Putter and Tabby Spin the Yarn

Grades PreK-2 44 pages Sandpiper October 2007 Paperback

Mr. Putter and his cat, Tabby, live next door to Mrs. Teaberry and her dog, Zeke. Mrs. Teaberry is an excellent neighbor who is always baking delightful things for Mr. Putter to eat.

One day, Mrs. Teaberry asks if Mr. Putter would like to join her new knitting club. He demurs, but decides that he would like to serve the tea to her knitting group. After all, this presents the perfect opportunity for him to thank Mrs. Teaberry for all that she has done for him.

At the knitting group the next day, Tabby finds it very stressful to be around so much yarn - there must be fifty balls of yarn in that room. Poor Tabby’s teeth start to chatter from the excitement.

Zeke has been banished to the kitchen. One of the guests was wearing a hat with a lot of fake vegetables on it, and Zeke kept trying to steal the potatoes from it. Mr. Putter and Tabby decide to keep Zeke company in the kitchen. Mr. Putter prepares a nice tea and carries it out the ladies, which is when the fun begins. Zeke tears the big plastic potato off the lady’s hat. Tabby gets herself entangled in a ball of yarn and causes the complete unraveling of a sweater that was seven months in the making. How will Mr. Putter fix this mess?

Cynthia Rylant’s latest book in the Mr. Putter & Tabby series is amusing. The text is suitable for beginning readers looking for a chapter book. The accompanying cartoon-like drawings are energetic and amusing and allow even very young children to follow the story with ease.
