Brownie and Pearl Step Out (Ready to Read, Pre-Level One)
by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Brian Biggs
Ages 3-5 24 pages Simon Spotlight May 2014 Paperback

This picture book has been out for awhile, but it still works nicely with young readers. The text is very simple, with short sentences and big print. The situation also relates to youngsters who may not be too willing to attend a friend’s birthday party.

Brownie is rather shy and isn’t sure she wants to go to a party. Her cat, Pearl, is not shy and goes along with the little girl. Of course, once she gets there, Brownie has a wonderful time. She’s happy she went, so all ends well.

This is part of the Ready-to-Read series featuring these two characters. The illustrations are top-notch, and most children—especially little girls—love them.
