Hong Kong publisher Michael Neugebauer enlists Tokyo-born author/illustrator Yusuke Yonezu to introduce very young readers to simple shapes using spare, bold images, symmetry and nested shapes, and lots and lots of love.
A host of animals from birds and mice to bears and elephants love each other, side to side and big and small. Each pair of animals illustrates a simple shape with a unique cut-out set-up across two double-page spreads each. Heart, circle, triangle square--the shapes are familiar, although the inclusion of a trapezoid might throw little ones (and grownup readers) off a bit.
The cut-outs lend extra tactility and ease of page-turning for small hands. The cuddlesome animal pairs look happier together than alone, and the bright colors that surround the shapes and fill the animals' bodies add a color-concept dimension that complements the introduction to basic geometrical shapes.
The book ends with a happy surprise: not just a pair of animals but two big ones and one small one between them, because "Cats love each other... And their kitten too." A great little board book for snuggle-and-learn time.
